Trollbeads Inspiration from Leigh Webster!

leigh-1

Today I’m delighted to feature gorgeous images from Trollbeads collector and Instagram star, Leigh Webster!  Her carefully curated collection and her beautifully designed compositions have been a source of  inspiration for so many of us, and today she has kindly agreed to share a series of images with our readers at Tartooful.

leigh3

Trollbeads Spring 2016 collection is now only days away from being officially released, and our ladies have already been making up wishlists for this stunning group of designs… with the softest and most subtle of colours, lots of yummy sparkle and some fresh new silvers that promise to become classics, this is an extraordinarily strong collection.

leigh5

As you are making up your personal “lust lists”, it’s fun to think where your new little beauties will settle in among the beads that are already nestled in your bead box.  What will be the companions for the new designs?  There are lots of directions where one could take the new beads, and many possible palettes… but surely the one that Leigh has suggested here is an inspired one!

leigh2

The new beads will be right at home among the soft blues offered by “Traces”, “Light Blue Stripe” or “Baby Boy”… and delicious Aurora designs such as “Moonlight Bubbles”, “Aurora Flower” or “Aurora Stripe” will offer the perfect, shimmering mood to match the feminine shimmer and sparkle of the Spring collection.

Have you peeked in your bead box and started to imagine your new Spring bracelet?  (we have!)  If not, drop by Tartooful with your beads for a Spring redesign!

Trollbeads Inspiration: A walk in the Forest

IMG_0950

IMG_0945Today I enjoyed a day of mid winter brilliant sunshine here at Tartooful… We went for our morning trail walk along the creek close to our home, and the combination of pure blue sky and rich green forest was absolutely magical!  It’s been a wonderful experience to get to know the forest in an intimate way over the past six months, as we have walked the same trail over and over through the changing of the seasons.  When we started our daily trail walks it was the height of Summer, with warm, dawns that broke at five in the morning.

IMG_0947The midsummer forest was lush and brilliant emerald green, with soft leaves filling the branches of the birch that line the creek.  The trail was dusty and stayed on my skin and in my nostrils long after we had gone on with the rest of our day.  Over the weeks my feet came to know every rock, and every turn of the trail.  Just when I thought I had it’s path fully memorized the season began to turn to Autumn and it became a completely different place again.  With the arrival of the rains the paths first became hard and wet… then became sodden in low places and occasionally even became little creeks!

IMG_0949

IMG_0946When the leaves first started to fall it felt strange, how messy, and brown our little stretch of forest was becoming… but then the light began to change and the beauty of the Autumnal forest became more clear.  With every leaf that dropped, the floor of the forest became a little more brightly illuminated, and little treasures became visible in every nook and cranny.  Fall blooming crocus peeked through here, a patch of brilliant yellow mushrooms there… even the slugs seemed taken aback by the sudden bright light!

IMG_0944

Now we’re in the depths of Winter, and we’ve seen frosty mornings, where icicles decorate the edges of the branches that dip into the creek, and the steps of the path glitter in the sun like diamonds.  This morning the sun came through the bare branches of the birch in beautiful white shafts, playing fascinating shadows on the graveled path.  I can’t wait to see the next six months as all the plants begin to wake up and unfurl their foliage once again.  It’s hard to believe that in only a few short weeks we’ll once again be in the green light of the canopy of leaves!

Trollbeads Inspiration: Mother’s Day Rose

IMG_8400

IMG_8396This past week saw the release of an absolutely stunning, Limited Edition glass Trollbead.  Designed by Japanese glass designer Nozomi Kaji, the Mother’s Day Limited Edition Rose bead is quickly being snapped up by collectors. The Trollie in the know is already familiar with her amazing creations.  You may remember her as the

Screen Shot 2015-02-24 at 12.08.54 PMinnovative designer of the subtle and lovely Limited edition “Kimono Kit”, released in 2011.  In that case the beads were inspired by the patterns and colours of traditional Japanese Kimonos and were made from velvety soft Japanese Glass.  Even now the designs stand out in their simplicity and elegance.

zen-1Since that time Ms Kaji has come to our attention again with the release of various amazing Limited Edition glass releases.  “Blooming Sakura” was one of the most desirable of the World Tour Limited Editions of 2012.  It’s one of those beads that one simply has to have… but can be quite tricky to use!  With a combination of sky blue, white, yellow and a dash of lavender, this bead sets the tone for whatever composition upon which it is placed.  I usually find a good home for mine with lilacs and pinks, but many of our talented ladies create lovely designs with crisp white and yellow as well.

Screen Shot 2015-02-24 at 12.43.16 PMNext, this past Autumn we fell in love with “Ageless Beauty”, a showstopping diva of a bead that features rich blue flowers with hearts of delicate celery yellow, all set on a field of crimson.  Again, not a bead that blends in – in a good way!  I have enjoyed playing together various compositions with my Ageless Beauty, usually with lots of rich ruby toned amber for a warm and sophisticated palette that matches the mood of the Beauty.

IMG_8392

IMG_8398Finally, here we are in early Spring, and the latest creation by Ms Nozomi is just exactly what we are craving!  After the long, dark, wet winter we are finally starting to see the first flowers here on the West Coast, with pink cherries, cheerful narcissus, crocus, snowdrops, forsythia and so many more now bursting into bloom.

IMG_8395It feels like the perfect time for my Trollbeads to come into bloom, too!  For today’s necklace we have created a frothy pink concoction, with the silver “Cherry Blossom Bead”, the new limited edition “Rose”, “Desert Rose”, and “Wild Cherry”, all on a polished sterling and pearl Fantasy Necklace.  Bright and beautiful for Spring!

Trollbeads Inspiration: Spring 2015 Collection – Glowing Pinks

IMG_8094

IMG_8098Spring officially sprang today at Tartooful!   (Never mind the stubborn rain clouds, they’ll come around…)  The gorgeous new collection by Trollbeads for Spring of 2015 feels like a ray of warm sunshine, and has us dreaming of cloudless skies, flowers and beaches.

IMG_8096

IMG_8093With soft pinks, handy neutrals, juicy aquas, a handful of sparkle, and lots of super detailed silvers, this collection has a beautiful little something for everyone.  Today I was able to make up a half a dozen bracelets, each one with a radically different feel, and each one mostly composed of new designs.  The first one I’d like to share is inspired by one of the showstopping beads of the new series, the “Pink Conch”.  This pink and warm grey, striped bead is sprinkled with gold sparkle… (see center, above.)

IMG_8092This pink, grey and gold bracelet was so simple to create, it practically built itself!  It was such fun to see how this bead integrates with some of our favorites from the existing collection… “Honey Dawn, “Silver Trace, Gold”, “Pink Gold” and “Desert Rose” are all natural companions for the peachy new “Pink Petals” and “Pink Conch”.

Pink and gold has long been one of our favorite palettes at Tartooful, but the addition of a hint of grey gives it a whole new, fully grownup appeal.  These warm grey designs will be so useful blended with everything  – teal, emerald green, turquoise, hot pink, red, sapphire blue…

IMG_8091

A few observations on various of these new designs:  “Seven Chakras” is satisfyingly heavy and symmetrical, despite its’ smaller size.  I think that its abstract, compact shape will make it a favorite for me to divide groupings of glass towards the end of bracelets, close to the clasp.  The new Cherry Blossom Lock is really beautiful.  It’s a little trickier to open the small end, so I recommend it for bracelets that aren’t redesigned every single day – but sooo worth the tiny bit of extra care, as it is stunning. Finally, I wasn’t certain about “Guardian of Nature” from the stock images, but now that I have seen it in person I very much like it… it’s nicely rounded and weighted, and I love the quizzical little faces that peek out between the foliage.  Classic Troll!

IMG_8090

Clockwise from clasp:  “Cherry Blossom Clasp”, “Unique”, “Seven Chakras”, “Unique Amber”, “Engraved Romance”, “The Positive No”, “Pink Gold”, “Tropical Conch”, “Desert Rose”, “Compass”, “Honey Dawn”, “Rose Quartz”, “Silver Trace, Gold”, “Wild Cherry”, “Pink Petals”, “Neptune’s Promise”, “Desert Rose”, “Guardian of Nature”, “Pink Conch”, “Unique Amber”, “Seven Chakras”, “Unique”.

Welcome, Spring!

Happy Halloween

IMG_7526

IMG_7535It’s the spookiest day of the year, and to mark the occasion we’ve pulled out all the stops, creating a bracelet that is pretty both a treat to see and quite tricky to pull together.  (Hee hee…)

Eschewing the usual orange and black concoctions, (which we also love), we decided to play with pale and eerie colours.  Think hand painted black and white photographs, greyed driftwood or dried flowers on bent and broken Autumn stems…

IMG_7538

IMG_7528Of course, we couldn’t resist the latest designs from Trollbeads that are apropos at this time of year… the “Sleepy Bat” and the new bat themed decorative lock.  However, we also reached for Halloween stars from previous seasons such as “Inner Glow” and “Skeleton Spirit”.  The skeleton is really such an amazing design… each vertebra is so

IMG_7532lovingly sculpted, and the curve of the back is perfect.  I almost like looking at it’s back best!  The “Bead of Fortune” is one of the other very few designs that features a skull…

IMG_7536

The “Trinity” is shimmery spooky lovely and is a fun, tongue in cheek reference to the “Holy Ghost”…

IMG_7527Another fun troll fact:  Melanie noticed recently that the “Spirit of Freedom” is seated in precisely the same pose as the “Skeleton Spirit”.  Could it be that our skeleton friend is intended to really be Peter, but in a form that is just a shadow of his former self?  She has the two beads on the same bracelet for a touch of fabulously dark humour.

IMG_7523

Clockwise from clasp:  “Spooky Bat Lock”, “Rosa Pearl”, “White Paper Fold”, “Trinity”, “Unique Amber”, “Engraved Romance”, “The Diamind Bead, White”, “Bead of Fortune”, Silver Mountain”, “Rose Quartz”, “Inner Glow”, “Skeleton Spirit”, “Blizzard”, “Silver Trace, Gold”, “Silver Mountain”, “Forest Treasures”, “Unique Amber”, “White Steel”, “Rose Quartz, Round”, “Sleepy Bat”, “Unique”, “Unique”.

Well, you’ve seen the treat… now it’s time for the trick!  On this bracelet there is not one, but two glow in the dark beads.  The white “Blizzard” bead glows a lovely lavender shade after being exposed to natural light, and the “Inner Glow” is a vibrant green after charging up in artificial light.  We’ve often said that one would have to be very organized and plan ahead to build a bracelet and have them both glowing at the same time!  Aaaand… TA DA!  Happy Halloween everyone!

Trollbeads Bangle Inspiration: The Art of Packing Light

IMG_6989

“We all traveled light, taking with us only what we considered to be the bare essentials of life.  When we opened out luggage for Customs inspection, the contents of our bags were a fair indication of character and interests.

IMG_6990

Thus Margo’s luggage contained a multitude of diaphanous garments, three books on slimming, and a regiment of small bottles each containing some elixir guaranteed to cure acne.  Leslie’s case held a couple of roll-top pullovers and a pair of trousers which were wrapped around two revolvers, an air-pistol, a book called “Be Your Own Gunsmith”, and a large bottle of oil that leaked.  Larry was accompanied by two trunks of books and a brief-case containing his clothes.  Mother’s luggage was sensibly divided between clothes and various volumes on cooking and gardening.

IMG_6988

I traveled with only those items that I thought necessary to relieve the tedium of a long journey:  four books on natural history, a butterfly net, a dog and a jam-jar full of caterpillars all in imminent danger of turning into chrysalids.  Thus, by our standards fully equipped, we left the clammy shores of England.”

Trollbeads Inspiration: Beautiful Words

Screen Shot 2014-09-24 at 4.09.39 PM

IMG_6977Every day it seems as though our kids are a little taller, a little bigger, a little bit more grown up.  It’s hard to see them leaving childhood behind, and acquiring adult problems and responsibilities… (My eldest is taller than me, now!)  On the other hand it makes me proud and happy to know them as the lovely people they are becoming.

IMG_6979One of the wonderful parts of having older children is sharing favorite films and books as they are ready for them… For example I had a most enjoyable evening recently watching “the Life Aquatic” with a couple of the kids.  I saw it and was enchanted by it years ago, but experienced it with fresh eyes as they saw it for the first time.

IMG_6980

IMG_6973Another recent pleasure was re-reading My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell.  This beautifully written, charming and hilarious book was a favorite of mine when I was around ten.  Now it’s a title I can share with the children, and I am experiencing it with a completely different perspective.  For those of you who have not enjoyed

IMG_6974this author’s works, he was a British naturalist and author with a gift for humorous narrative, and the ability to paint exquisite images with his words.  The following is an excerpt from My Family and Other Animals.  This passage is early in the book, and it describes Mr Durrel’s first impression of Corfu, Greece, as he arrived there as a small child.

IMG_6976“The sea lifted smooth blue muscles of wave as it stirred in the dawn-light, and the foam of our wake spread gently behind us like a white peacock’s tail, glinting with bubbles.  The sky was pale and stained with yellow at the

IMG_6975eastern horizon.  Ahead lay a chocolate-brown smudge of land, huddled in mist, with a frill of foam at its base.  This was Corfu, and we strained our eyes to make out the exact shapes of the mountains, to discover valleys. peaks, ravines, and beaches, but it remained a silhouette.  Then suddenly the sun shifted over the horizon, and the sky turned the smooth enameled blue of a jay’s eye.”

IMG_6972

Breathtaking, isn’t it?  It draws such a clear and compelling picture for my mind’s eye – even though my little Trollbeads shop in North Vancouver is a long way from Corfu, this passage take me right there, to the deck of that ship at dawn.  I feel lucky to have read beautiful words like these at an impressionable age.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Designing with Dramatic Silvers

IMG_6968

The new Trollbeads collection for Autumn 2014 includes dramatic silvers that are each tiny works of art in their own right.  I’m fascinated to see the intricate detail that can be contained in each design, and love the impact that they make on a piece of jewellery…

IMG_6957

IMG_6963There is, however, a bit of a trick to it.  Too many patterns, too many clashing shapes, too many forms to decipher – it can all be a bit much for me to wear on my wrist.  I find that my eye loves to dive into the details of Trollbeads…whether it’s a complex glass unique, or a

IMG_6958storytelling silver, the genius is in the details.  My eye pauses to savour each element as I glance at the bracelet.  If there are too many elements, I feel as though it requires too much of my attention and energy to wear the piece.

IMG_6967

IMG_6965…So how to wear and enjoy these dramatic and complex new silver designs?  I find that if I pair them with beads of calm mood, it works better for me.  The calm colours of “Silver Mountain”, “Azure Bubbles” and “Sapphire” are just right as a zen foil to the riot of pattern found in the silvers on the featured bracelet.

IMG_6964These glass beads are far from boring…. on the contrary, their swirls and earthy patterns are endlessly satisfying to me.  However, their lack of structured pattern and calming palette are just the thing to make highly patterned silvers feel sophisticated… Much better to fascinate with understatement, rather than hit the viewer over the head visually.

IMG_6955

Clockwise from clasp:  “Fish Lock”, “Grey Prism”, “Black Flower Mosaic”, “Trinity”, “Silver Mountain”, “Azure Bubbles”, “Khaki Stripe”, “Ganesha”, “Sapphire”, “Giant Lotus”, “Moonbeam Facet”, “Giant Lotus”, “Moon Ocean”, “Cornucopia”, “Snowflake Obsidian”, “Silver Mountain”, “Black Silk”, “Three Flowers”, “Blue Desert”.  (All beads in stock at Tartooful)

IMG_6962… I can already hear some of our talented collectors and designers replying to me… and yes, sometimes “More is More”.  I am not immune to the charms of the big statement, and I’ve been known to make the odd one myself… This entire blog entry is not really meant for you ladies who

IMG_6961already completely understand the appeal of the big statement silvers, and who dive right in to enjoy their beauty.  (You know who you are!)  (RT!)  This blog is for the rest of us… we’re the ones who fall in with love these silvers, happily take them home, place them on bracelets, and then take them right off again before leaving the house.

…So let’s see those “Ganeshas”, “Jugglers”, “Seers”, “Buddhas” and “Mouse (Mice?) on Cheese”… show me your fresh designs featuring your biggest, baddest and most beautiful silvers!

Trollbeads News: Autumn 2014 Trollbeads Collection

IMG_6833IMG_6829Can it really be?  After weeks of anticipation, we are thrilled to present the Autumn Collection of Trollbeads at Tartooful!  If you are imagining us hanging out in Vancouver, giggling in fits of glee as we unpack the boxes, and rolling the beads through our fingers in delight… well, you are not far off the mark.  (blush) …

Today let’s take a little peek at a couple of the most exciting new pieces:  “Lapis Lazuli” is a rich new addition to the stones collection, and “Moonbeam Facet” will be the jewel on many of our ladies’ most beloved compositions.

There was so much buzz in advance of the release of the Lapis Lazuli – we were very eager to unwrap the stone and see if it really was as rich, saturated and downright gorgeous as the photos.  I’m so happy to confirm that this one is every bit as beautiful as the stock photos suggested.  We received a number of these lovelies and every single one is a stunner.

IMG_6827IMG_6828With a deep, clean blue and subtle dots of sparkling gold, these stones are classic examples of Lapis Lazuli.  In this composition we have placed it with other light, warm blues and lots of hits of intense sapphire blue.  It creates a bracelet that celebrates this colour saturated blue, while softening the overall look enough for everyday wear.  I fond the deep, cobalt blues of Trollbeads’ glass to be mesmerizing, and so very attractive, but simply too intense for me to wear an entire bracelet.  By adding compatible, but slightly more subtle blues such as “Moon Ocean”, “The Eye”, and “Wave of Dreams” my eyes have a chance to catch their breath!

IMG_6832IMG_6824In this particular bracelet we have chosen crisp blacks and neutral greys to complete the palette.  This makes for a cool, classic look that could be worn year round, with everything from dressy to very casual clothing.  Another approach could have been to take our cue from the little hints of gold in the Lapis Lazuli… follow the lead of the warm, sandy “Milan” and “Black Flower Mosaic”, and introduce lots of warm khakis and golden ambers.  Honey or cognac amber would make a beautiful complement to the rich blues in this composition, and would create a completely different look.  I love to blend ambers, as well as glass such as “Dewdrops” and stones such as “Golden Quartz” with almost any shade of blue.  The new “Brown yellow chalcedony” will surely be a welcome addition to that arsenal…

IMG_6821

Clockwise from clasp:  “Fish Lock”,  “Unique”, “Unique”, “Wave of Dreams”, “Labyrinth”, “Unique”, “Snowflake Obsidian”, “Moonbeam Facet”, “Soft Heart”, “Milan”, “Unique”, “Lapis Lazuli”, “Love Within”, “Black Flower Mosaic”, “Dendritic Agate”, “Moon Ocean”, “Transformation”, “Fountain of Life”, “Eye Bead” (retired), “Moonbeam Facet”, “Water”, “The Eye”, “Faceted Chalcedony”, “Unique”.
