Trollbeads Event At Tartooful!

october-event

At Tartooful, there’s nothing that we love better than throwing a party…

…and there’s no better excuse than a big, beautiful shipment of unique glass beads and the most exciting carved amber designs that we have ever been privileged to see.

These are some absolutely drop-dead beautiful beads, and any one of them would instantly be the jewel of most collections.  We are thrilled to be able to present them to you!  This alone would be cause for celebration, but add to that a menu of classic trunk-show specials, and it becomes spectacular.

The fine print:

  • Purchase one item, get the fourth item of equal or lesser value as our gift

or

  • Purchase a decorative lock and receive the sterling bracelet chain as our gift

and

  • Every purchaser is entered into a draw to win a coveted 40th anniversary jewellery box.

Our event kicks off Oct 17th and runs until Oct 23rd, so we are looking forward to catching up with all of you in the Village!  Not in our neck of the woods?  No worries.  We will be posting our unique  beads on our Facebook page, where they may be easily browsed, even if you don’t have a Facebook account.  For regular collection orders, be sure to check into our online shop, and simply let us know in a note what item you’d like for your fourth item free.  We are also happy to work with you via email at tartooful@gmail.com, or give us a ring at 604-924-0122 for a friendly consultation by phone.

So… dust off those wishlists, bring us your partly completed projects and get ready to be inspired!

Trollbeads Inspiration: Ombre Raspberry

3

Ombre beadplay is always a fun little design project…

9Casting an eye over our selection of uniques today I noticed that we have an absolutely marvelous collection of raspberry pinks in stock at the moment.  I decided to have a bit of a play with them, but thought I’d give the design a little twist and try my hand at a crimson-to-pale pink ombre composition….

This collection of beads are wonderful, rich shades of soft blush pink through raspberry and down into a deep, satisfying crimson.  Add an absolutely dazzling array of pattern and texture, and no matter how this composition came

5together it was bound to be a fantastic bracelet.  I really think that with these beads it would be impossible to make the bracelet look anything but gorgeous.

The most essential tool when designing this sort of bracelet is definitely a play tray… I string the beads onto the rod to find just the right placement for each bead.  Often I’ll think I know just where a bead “belongs” in the ombre gradation – and then when I slot it in, it becomes apparent that it really looks better a little to the right or left.

4

8At the two extreme ends of this bracelet design you’ll find some of the opaque unique beads that are such a delight to true collectors.  The rich red and glittery one shown above has actually been tempting me for my own collection!  So luxe and utterly delicious.  At the other end of the bracelet be sure to note the beads that have elegantly formed flowers traced on milk glass backgrounds.  These have been such a lovely fresh addition to the design oeuvre of glass Trollbeads uniques.  I’d love to see an entire bracelet made up of these delicate beauties.

I knew that I wouldn’t allow many silvers to find their way onto this bracelet design…. partly because the fun of an ombre is to see how the colours relate to each other, gently transitioning from one shade to the next.  It was also in large part because there were simply too many gorgeous beads that I wished to include in the composition!  However, the overall effect is much more effective with a little silver to break up the colour blocks and allow the eye a spot to pause and rest.  In the end I selected a few highly ornate silvers that were up to the task of matching the drama of their glass companions.

11

Both the silver and the glass elements in this composition are like a confection for the eye…

Trollbeads Inspiration: Transition

IMG_2066

IMG_2063Have you felt it in your part of the world?  Here on the West coast of Canada, there’s been a subtle shift in the light these last few days.  Even until last week, I felt as though I was in the middle of an everlasting Summer.  The days were long and warm, with bocce games that stretched into the evening.  The light was bright and clear, and the skies were blindingly blue.  One day recently there was a little wind winding through the garden that played a scattering of pale, dry leaves off our dogwood tree, and suddenly I could see the first signs of Autumn.

IMG_2062

IMG_2053It wasn’t really the leaves on the pathway, that alerted me to the upcoming change in the seasons… there other clues as well.  There has been a shift in the angle and colour of the light that unmistakably whispers “Autumn”.  The light is still bright, but it’s just a bit more golden and mellow.  The sky is still brilliant blue, but there’s a bit of a haze in the morning and evening.  Night falls much earlier now, and after dinner we are more likely to be having a sunset stroll than struggling to spot our bocce marker in the dusk.

IMG_2060IMG_2064As always, seasonal change suggests a change in the way we dress, the colours we wear, the textures we enjoy in our homes… and of course, a change in the way we wear our Trollbeads.  I set out to design a bracelet that felt just right for this time of year, when we are still enjoying lots of Summer warmth, but are looking ahead to the Autumnal months that are just around the corner.

I began by reaching for my very favorite, aqua tones that feel like the beach glass of Summer.

IMG_2059

IMG_2055I blended those watery blue greens with a selection of inky blacks, most of which have an element of earthy texture or glitter.  That little touch of warmth helps to keep the feel natural and not too terribly stark.  Many of the aqua beads also have an earthy element that I enjoy… for example, the ribbon of stone texture that wraps around the “Traces” bead, or the marvellous green and stone textured unique at left.

IMG_2061

I was delighted to find this generously sized, black and taupe unique to place right at the heart of the bracelet.  It’s colours and pattern are the perfect inspiration to lead all the other black elements in the bracelet, and it matches the drama offered by the Emerald and Amazonite that are on either side.

IMG_2052

There’s a feeling right now of being in the calm before the storm.  Perhaps it’s simply because my young family will be returning to a new school year, and all the frantic scheduling that accompanies that change… but I am savouring the quiet last days of Summer.  I wanted the silvers to also reflect the mood of the season, so I looked for ones that were simple and fluid in appearance.  “Path of Life” and “Starry Night” have a near meditative calm about them, and I repeated each design twice for optimum impact without complexity.

If you are contemplating the season to come, and mulling how to update your favorite Summer design for Fall, why not drop by the gallery one day, (or drop us a note with a photo of your bracelet) and let us have a little play?  We can find a couple of inspired additions that will give a whole new twist to your bracelet and have you freshly designed for Autumn.  This is the perfect time to do so, as our “End of Summer Sale” is now on until 31 August, and you will enjoy 15% off all our Trollbeads!  Drop by and pay us a visit, or shop online using promo code friend15 to claim your discount.

Trollbeads Challenge Day 12

IMG_1783

Today it’s all about “Aurora”.  There are a handful of regular collection and limited edition beads that are unmistakably “Aurora”, and until fairly recently I thought we had to be content with this narrow selection of designs.  However, lately I have noticed quite a few unique designs which feature that distinctive, hazy shimmer.

IMG_1775

For the most part, these beads display a more subtle version of the Aurora effect, which has opened up new design options for me.  I find now I can combine my softer Azure Bubbles with paler traditional Aurora designs and the new subtle uniques for a fresh look.  Add a hint of dichroic glass and a couple of luminous stones and it’s a complete design.

IMG_1781The pair of stones that I have employed in this design are the smooth, retired form of “Chalcedony” and a treasured, very translucent “Dendritic Agate”.  I’ve had the Chalcedony for many years, but the Dendritic Agate is a very recent addition.  I came across it  just before the Challenge began, so it managed to slip into the collection just in time.  Dendritic Agate is a variety of Chalcedony Quartz, and is often found with deposits of other types of Chalcedony.  This relationship is easy to see in a translucent example such as this, where the two stones are nearly identical, save for a few traces of Dendritic Agate’s distinctive fern textural markings.  Imagine how difficult it must be for stone cutters to predict how to cut and facet these stones to best display their hidden branchlike patterns… years of experience and well honed instincts must be required!

These Azure bubbles play nicely with others…

Trollbeads Challenge: Day 10

IMG_1809

Today I am featuring a lush bracelet design with saturated colour and heaps of texture and pattern.  It’s an abrupt change from the simplicity and calm of yesterday, and a fun exploration of the huge range of expression that the Trollbeads toolbox offers.

IMG_1804

IMG_1810I adore cranberry red, even more so when combined with other saturated tones such as raspberry, pink, coral, goldenrod yellow – or in this case all of them!  It’s a “Singapore sling” bracelet with juicy sunset colours that range from soft pink and peach down into egg yolk yellow, raspberry, tomato red and claret.  These riotous colours all play together nicely, partly because they are all in the warm red family, but also because the textures and patterns of the glass are of a similar complexity and mood.

I could have contrasted the ornate glass with simple silvers to offer a pause for the eye, but instead, consciously chose to make this bracelet an extreme contrast to yesterday’s breath of calm.  I enjoy playing at both ends of the Trollbeads design spectrum!

Trollbeads Inspiration: Day to Day

blog6

blog2

Everyone needs a couple of “Day to Day” jewellery designs.  I have rings that are worn so often that they feel like part of my hands… a couple of necklaces that are daily apparel, and of course a few bracelets that are  particularly beloved and useful.  If you are a die hard Trollie, you immediately know which of your own designs fall into this category… it’s the bracelet that always travels with you… the one that just seems to go with everything… the one that perhaps you are wearing right now?

blog5

The appearance of that bracelet will of course vary according to your taste and needs, but for me it always seems to be some combination that features soft greys.

blog4So today, I decided to dive into the case of current bead stock and see what sort of “Day to Day” bracelet design I could play together.  I’m quite delighted with the result.  I started by combining two “Triple Pearl” beads, one an inky blue-grey and the other a perfectly clean white.  These are large-scale beads that combine both pearls and detailed silver hydrangeas for lots of drama, so they needed companions that could stand up to them.  I centred a silver “Big World” and framed it with a nicely marked “Dendritic Agate” and a stunning Sapphire.

blog3

I rounded out the silver component by adding the design siblings of “Spiritual Adornment” and “Spiritual Ornament”.  A handful of well-chosen and complex uniques help to complete the look.

I like to think that this is the sort of bracelet that one could reach for several times a week as we go into the warmer months… The substantial silvers, the beautiful stones, the fascinating uniques – it would never be humdrum.  Best of all, it would feel “just right” with everything from a little black dress to jeans and a white t-shirt.  C.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Inky Azures

IMG_0615

IMG_0620A new wave of Azure Bubbles arrived recently at the gallery, and we fell in love with this changeable beauty of a bead all over again.  This grouping of glass are all deep, inky blues with a host of micro bubbles in each one.  The usual large bubbles are still there, but in the layer below that there is a subtle, milky way swath of the tiniest of bubbles.

IMG_0614

IMG_0618They look almost like the silver dots in group two glass “Milky Way” – but even smaller.  It’s fascinating stuff!  For those of us who have a mild obsession with this particular pattern of bead, it represents an entire new are of collecting to be done.  Some of them are almost chocolate in colour, with just a hint of blue that shows when the light reflects off the core.

IMG_0616

IMG_0617Others are a more slate blue, still others are a deep violet with subtle ribbons of indigo.  My favorites are those that have a hint of green in the blue, with lots of micro bubbles, and a flash of burgundy as the light hits them.  Gorgeous!

These new Azures are bang on for Autumn colour trends, and will be

IMG_0621phenomenal paired with rich clarets – think Rubies, cherry ambers or the upcoming Hessonite Garnet!  Today I’ve chosen a spectacular group of unique ambers that sparkle and glow in the sunlight.  They make a perfect foil for the deep navies of the Azures.

IMG_0612

This bracelet was a cinch to play together… the Azures and Ambers work together effortlessly and with the addition of a few bolder silvers and a handful of Scot Bouwens’ beautifully organic glass – voila!

Trollbeads Inspiration: Little Frog and the Night Sky

IMG_9050Five frogs call this necklace home…

IMG_9054Once upon a time there were five frogs, who all lived together in a round pond in the deep and leafy woods.  They swam in the green coloured sunshine all day, eating mosquitos and playing “pass the bubble” together.  At night they found a cosy spot and curled up together in a circle.  They would whisper froggy stories to each to each other as they drifted off to sleep.  It was a happy way for a frog to be, and a sweet life.

IMG_9056 Green Jasper is subtly rich…

IMG_9055One evening, as the frogs went to settle into a leafy nook to get sleepy, they realized that the smallest frog of all wasn’t tucked into the story circle.  Where could he be?  They called to him.. “Little Frog?”… but no answer.  They were curious frogs, and just a little concerned, so they popped out into the dusky light to find their friend.

IMG_9058It didn’t take long to find him.  There he was, just above their sleepy hiding spot, sitting on a leaf and gazing in rapture at the darkening sky.  “Little Frog”, they cried, “what are you doing?  It’s time to be sleepy and we missed you!”.  The little frog turned to his friends in amazement, and said “I was a little late, chasing one last mosquito… but look – have you seen this?  Just look at the sky.  There is the most beautiful thing there, sparkling in the dark…”

IMG_9052Looking towards the sky, the little group of frogs saw, for the very first time, a star.  They became very quiet, and sat together with their friend, watching with wide round eyes.  The first star of the evening glowed brightly, and over the next few minutes the sky darkened from grey to pale and then sapphire blue.  Finally, the sky was velvety black and sparkled with the infinite host of stars that can only be seen deep in the leafy woods and far away from human places.  The beauty of the night sky gave the little frogs so much joy that deep in their green and slightly clammy breasts, their hearts seemed too full.  Little Frog’s amphibian heart could bear no more, so he started to sing softly, just to let out some of the joy.  One by one his friends joined in, and together they sang the happiness of the beauty of the stars.

IMG_9050

Nowadays, if the evening is clear and fine, the five frog friends always sit out for just a little while to sing joyfully with the stars before curling up in their sleepy hiding spot.  On rainy nights they still enjoy a cosy, froggy story, but nothing makes them happier than to sing goodnight with the stars.  In fact, if you go very quietly to the round pond in the deep and leafy woods just at dusk, you too might hear the frogs’ star song…
