Trollbeads inspiration: A Bracelet for RA

r2-7Recently I was delighted to receive an inquiry from a faraway Trollie who was looking for inspiration.  She had purchased two of the limited edition green and purple armadillos, and was wondering how to effectively showcase them in a bracelet design.  Her first thought was to surround them with vibrant colour, such as the Saffron and

r2-2Masala Facet beads.  However, over the process of several draft designs, she has decided that she would prefer to frame them with jewel toned purples and rich golden amber tones.  The pair of armadillos can frame a dramatic center bead, such as an “Amethyst” or the “Diamond Bead, Black”.  Bold silvers won’t compete with the rich colour.

r2-11Golden Cave, possibly used in multiples, will give a bronze glow to the bracelet, tying in perfectly with both the amber and the purples.  RA plans to “finish” the design with a smaller purple unique, and a well matched purple prism.  I can imagine a “Ruby” taking a the starring role on the bracelet at some point, and a “Ruby Falcon” as its companion…

r2-3Creating a highly personal design for each Trollbeads collector is a fascinating process.  Colour is so subjective.  What makes one person’s heart sing may not feel right to another – so no two bracelets are alike!  In the end it’s really an evolution.  One begins with one or two beads and simply feels one’s way along… I have a feeling that RA’s bracelet is going to evolve beautifully, and am looking forward to seeing it grow!

Trollbeads Inspiration: Green and Purple Armadillo

Like many Trollies, I have a little weakness for Armadillos… and the new Green and Purple Limited Edition hadn’t been in the gallery for five minutes when I had chosen one for my own!

purple2It’s a wonderful shade of warm, claret purple… but even better, it is cut with an acid green that washes away any trace of sweetness, leaving a bold and edgy statement.  I own one of the retired green armadillos, and love to place it on bracelets that need to be taken down a notch… perfectly sweet pink and white compositions are far

purple3more interesting with a touch of this slightly evil green.  It’s a trick I employ in the garden as well – try planting some Ladies Mantle among your roses.  It nicely covers the bare ground and unsightly, spiky stems, and when it comes into acid green bloom it acts as a complementary jolt to the roses’ pinks and reds.

purple6The secret lies in the colour wheel – the green lies opposite the plums that it complements so well.  The eye seeks out the opposing colour for relief, so by placing two complementary colours in proximity, each one appears more intense, more vibrant and more beautiful.  It’s the science and biology of colour, but its also intuitive.  By following one’s instinctive feelings about colour, one naturally gravitates to complementary palettes, and beautiful designs happen so easily.

clockwise from clasp:  “Fish Lock”, “Green and Purple Armadillo”,  “Arabian Hare”, “Purple Flower Mosaic”, “Turquoise Prism”, “African Tortoise”, “Green and Purple Armadillo”, “Ruby Falcon”, “Deep Bubbles” (retired), “Jewel Fairy Basselet”, “Amethyst”, “Unique Amber”, “Moroccan Cushion”, “Flowers on Indigo”, “Snake”, “Green and Purple Armadillo”.

Thank you to the talented Cristi for today’s bracelet!C.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Spring Tiptoes in Softly…

We’ve been playing nonstop with the beautiful new Spring Collection Trollbeads and we are astonished by the huge range of expression that we can achieve with the palette.

IMG_4300Today one of our favorite combinations features a soft and subtle blend of blues and greens.  (Predictable, I know.  What can I say, we love our soft and subtle!)

This is a very wearable, everyday set of colours that works with the new neutrals of denims and greys.  It’s simply the way we dress now, with jeans, heathered

emeraldgrey sweaters and leather boots with aged patina.  Unsurprisingly, we’ve chosen to frame the superstar new bead, “Emerald” with a pair of “Azure Bubbles”.  These examples are generous in size and echo the milky green of the emerald without overwhelming it.  The green of this new stone is very satisfying… soft yet

magical-lanternclean and glowing.  It reminds me of the colour of the water that filters out of the glaciers in the Spring… the waters carry a pale chalky sediment that reflects the light and shimmers with a near opalescent look.  The simplicity of the centerpiece Emerald contrasts beautifully with its sparkling companions.

dendriticWe’re delighted at how well the new series blends with our favorite designs of the regular collection… This dark and clear “Dendritic Agate” gives a little depth to the composition.  The “Black Flower Mosaic” shows such a tight array of textured pattern that it plays as an olive green, with bright flashes of light from the dichroic glass accents.

Clockwise from clasp:  “Sun Moon Stars Lock”, “Magical Lamp”, “Moss Agate”, “Three in One”, “Black Flower Mosaic”, “Dendritic Agate”, “Kaleidoscope”, “Oasis”, “Nomad”, “Azure Bubbles”, “Emerald”, “Azure Bubbles”, “Moroccan Pillow”, “Ancient Palace”, “Kaleidoscope”, “Labradorite”, “Aqua Edge Pumpkin”, “Snake”, “Silver Mountain”, “Unique”.

Trollbeads Spring 2013 Collection Launches

We are delighted to unveil the much anticipated Spring 2014 collection from Trollbeads… and it is every bit as original and beautiful as the early images promised!  Trollbeads describes it as…

“..a collection that takes you to exotic places and gives you a taste of mystery.  Explore Arabian Nights and Hanging Gardens..

Arabian_Nights_Close_Up_01The dromedary elegantly placed on a shimmering pink glass bead.  The snake is also present as a powerful symbol in many cultures.  Above all, flies the falcon.  One is flying in sterling silver, sending a message of love.  The other, with beautiful eyes that see things that humans cannot, also in sterling silver and placed on a deep purple ruby.”

Inspired by the hot wind Scirocco that blows from Northern Africa carrying sand from the Sahara, these sparkling glass beads came to life.  A little magic by nature.

Hanging_Gardens_Close_Up_01The Hanging gardens of Babylon are considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and are surrounded by mystery and legends.  A luxuriant inspiration for our Spring Collection.

Hanging_Gardens_Close_Up_02Sparkles in delicate turquoise in the ancient palace, glitter in royal blue in the fountain of life, and shimmer in elusive, fresh green in the Oasis.  The new lock “Sun Moon Stars” reminds you that life goes on as a glimpse of time under the great elements of the universe.”

IMG_4254The Spring collection has only one set of soft and subtle glass, rather than the usual two, but in this case every single one of the glass is drop dead gorgeous!  With fascinating shimmers of rose gold that are reminiscent of our beloved Desert series beads, these designs are instant stars… The examples of “Desert Rose” that we have thus far received are very similar to the existing “Pink Desert”, but with just a little more interest in the texture.  We look forward to seeing how this bead varies…

IMG_4258The blue and teal elements in the series will be beautiful additions to so many of our ladies bracelets… Over the past few days we have been playing with various colour combinations for these designs, and have found that they are spectacular in combination with the Aurora series of glass – the periwinkle just sings!

IMG_4249It takes time to appreciate all the nuances of a new series, but two of my personal early favorites are “Magical Lamp”, the olive green toned glass, and the “Drops of Delight”, which looks wonderfully middle eastern and ancient.  It feels like a fairytale element

IMG_4252The new silver designs are truly “Trollbeads”, with lots of fascinating detail that takes time to see, savour, and fully appreciate.  The expression on the face of the patient yet wry Tortoise… the little heart hidden beneath the Swan, the tattered texture of the Nomad’s textiles…

IMG_4253These are the kinds of details that only the master silversmiths of Trollbeads could imagine, design and create.   The “Kaleidoscope” shown at left will be an excellent choice to balance a “Trollcoin” or “Dreamcatcher” in a composition.. it reminds me of the flat, whirling spools used by nomads as they spun their nubbly wool…

We look forward to sharing more images and inspiration from the new collection over the next few days… be sure to stop by Tartooful in the Village to play with all the new designs, or drop by Tartoofultoo Online Shop to see them all individually with descriptions and pricing.

Now.. must run up to the gallery and have a bit of a play myself!
