Honey Honey

Like Honey for the Eyes…

IMG_0845We are just starting to really explore all the possibilities of the Autumn collection designs… and one of the most distinct new items is of course, the “Feldspar Moonstone”.  I have seen some absolutely wonderful designs online that play this warm pink moonstone off Labradorites, and pairing it with the new garnet tones makes for a marvelously rich palette.

IMG_0847However, the arrival of a little floral unique inspired this apricot and honey combination, and I am in love.  It’s a beautiful bead, with textured flowers in a warm lilac tone sprinkled across a clear, honey coloured glass base.  The light shines through the bead, and reflects out again off the silver core, making the whole thing seem to glow from within.  This unique led the way, and in no time I had played together a fresh combination of subtle lilac, warm apricot and clear golden ambers and glass.  So warm, so sweet and so natural, it’s just a pleasure to see.

I wanted the delicious colours of this bracelet to take center stage, so I intentionally kept the silvers calm and simple.  They reflect the light, and quietly shimmer along with the ambers.

A few regular collection glass play a critical role in providing a complementary, warm lilac note.  This “Purple Flower Mosaic” has two pink dichroic glass accents, as well as one golden one.  It’s a perfect choice for this bracelet.

Clockwise from clasp:  “Freya Lock”, “Rosa Pearl”, “Unique Amber”, “Purple Flower Mosaic”, “Starry Night”, “Luminous Facet”, “Power of Hope”, “Amber Violets”, “Trefoil Knot”, “Unique Amber”, “Feldspar Moonstone”, “Unique Amber”, “Soft Heart”, “Unique Glass”, “Power of Hope”, “Golden Quartz”, “Endless”, Unique”, “Unique Amber”, “Pink Prism”.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Inky Azures

IMG_0620A new wave of Azure Bubbles arrived recently at the gallery, and we fell in love with this changeable beauty of a bead all over again.  This grouping of glass are all deep, inky blues with a host of micro bubbles in each one.  The usual large bubbles are still there, but in the layer below that there is a subtle, milky way swath of the tiniest of bubbles.

IMG_0618They look almost like the silver dots in group two glass “Milky Way” – but even smaller.  It’s fascinating stuff!  For those of us who have a mild obsession with this particular pattern of bead, it represents an entire new are of collecting to be done.  Some of them are almost chocolate in colour, with just a hint of blue that shows when the light reflects off the core.

IMG_0617Others are a more slate blue, still others are a deep violet with subtle ribbons of indigo.  My favorites are those that have a hint of green in the blue, with lots of micro bubbles, and a flash of burgundy as the light hits them.  Gorgeous!

These new Azures are bang on for Autumn colour trends, and will be

IMG_0621phenomenal paired with rich clarets – think Rubies, cherry ambers or the upcoming Hessonite Garnet!  Today I’ve chosen a spectacular group of unique ambers that sparkle and glow in the sunlight.  They make a perfect foil for the deep navies of the Azures.

This bracelet was a cinch to play together… the Azures and Ambers work together effortlessly and with the addition of a few bolder silvers and a handful of Scot Bouwens’ beautifully organic glass – voila!

Clockwise from clasp:  “Freya Lock”, “Azure Bubble”, “Magical Lamp”, “Paradise Birds” (retired), “Azure Bubbles”, “Unique Amber”, “Stone Flower”, “Spiritual Adornment”, “Azure Bubbles”, “Unique Amber”, “Flowers on Indigo”, “Unique Amber”, “Azure Bubbles”, “Silver Ornament”, “Cliffs”, “Unique Amber”, “Azure Bubbles”, “Jugend”, “Magical Lamp”, “Azure Bubbles”.

Happy Trollbeads Day 2015

Happy Trollbeads Day!

IMG_9964Today marks the launch of the much anticipated Trollbeads Day Limited edition Glass Bead for 2015.  There has been much speculation about this bead, even after initial images were released on social media… there are so many colours and such soft, organic patterns in this bead, many collectors wondered if the beads would show large variations from one example to another?  Would the bead that they ordered be as lovely as the photos?

IMG_9969The answer to both questions is a resounding yes!  This is a bead that includes swaths of white, grey, lilac, bird’s egg blue and two shades of green.  The colours blend effortlessly from one to another, making a soft and lovely palette with subtle

IMG_9970differences from one example to another.  In some cases the swirl patterns make nearly geometrically perfect lines, and in others they blur and twist in a fascinating way.  In some examples there is a little more of one colour, and in others a little more of

IMG_9971another.  All of this adds up to a bead where every single one truly is unique… and every single one is *Gorgeous*!  The question this year is not “Did you buy the bead”, but rather… “What kind of bead did you get?”.  Every single one is a treasure.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Wing Man

IMG_8780Lately it seems to me that Grey is the ultimate “Wing Man” for brilliant colour…

While I savour colour drenched jewel tones, I find them almost too much for me to wear every day.  Their brilliance delights me, but I tend to reach for the more subtle colour

IMG_8782combinations to wear on a daily basis.

This is where grey comes to the rescue!  Acting as a subtle foil to the brighter jewel tones, this neutral allows jewel tones such as turquoise, cobalt, red, fuschia, emerald or purple to shine without overwhelming.  The strategic use of grey as a “wing man” neutral allows me to introduce those colours to my bead wardrobe.

Screen Shot 2015-03-16 at 4.28.21 PMThere are, of course, other neutrals that work beautifully in a number of colour blends… Black is a classic foil for all the same colours, but the result is a  slightly different mood.  The addition of black to most jewel tones gives a look that is more formal, more cosmopolitan and perhaps even a bit sultry.  Grey maintains the

Screen Shot 2015-03-16 at 4.29.53 PMsophistication, without the boudoir undertones.  It’s a comfortable look, contemporary yet warm and soft.

The addition of a number of new grey designs has been an exciting part of the Trollbeads Spring releases.  Traditional options remain:  “Snowflake Obsidian, Labradorite, “Grey Prism” and Dendritic Agate all offer their own version of the colour.  Now newcomers “Neptune’s Promise” and Tropical Conch” add new choices for the collector, and recently we have received a number of gorgeous grey “Ruby Rock”, with just a whisper of raspberry for interest.  As always, it is the exceptional beads, such as these Ruby Rocks, that particularly delight me.

Clockwise from Clasp:  “Freya Knot Lock”, “Grey Prism”, “Unique”, “Purple Flower Mosaic”, “Endless”, “Sea Anemone”, “Ruby Rock”, “Aurora Flower”, “Transformation”, “Tropical Conch”, “Amethyst”, “Neptune’s Promise”, “Trefoil Knot”, “Sea Anemone”, “Ruby Rock”, “Moonlight Bubbles”, “Three Siblings”, “unique”, “Tropical Conch”, “Purple Prism”.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Easter Dragons

IMG_8821This Easter, Trollbeads has created a very special set of treats for us… Eschewing the usual clutch of chicks, ducklings, bunnies and other reasonably harmless creatures, the witty designers at Trollbeads instead decided to create a collection inspired by the somewhat more dangerous “Traditional Easter Dragons”.

IMG_8822What’s that you say?  You weren’t aware that Dragons were an Easter Tradition?  Hmm.  No.  Me neither… but then I always serve the “Traditional Easter Ham… burgers”.  And that seems to work, so hey – why not Dragons?  I can see the rationale… after all, they do hatch out of eggs, and regardless – I rather like dragons.

IMG_8827Today I’ve imagined a bracelet that might delight a new baby dragon… With soft warm pastel pink for Spring, and lots of glowing gold it’s just the thing for a dragon nursery.  Perhaps when this dragon grows up it will want to decorate it’s cave with subtle greens, rich wines and lots of jewel tones… but this playful baby still likes shiny, sparkly

IMG_8825things and pretty shades of pink.  (It’s a good thing for us, because I happen to like those things, too!)

I very much like this new collection… a Dragon Lock feels like a very natural addition to the collection – in fact it’s hard to believe that it wasn’t already there.  It’s beautifully designed, with a long, sensitive neck

IMG_8824that wraps in an arc to make the large side of the lock.  The face is somewhat reminiscent of the “Lucky Dragon”, as though they might be dragon cousins… The tail wraps more tightly around to form the small side of the lock, and ends in a heart shaped point.

Most importantly, from a functional view, it’s a great lock which is easy to open and close on both ends and very comfortable to wear.

IMG_8819I find the new Easter dragon charming, with a sweet face and lovely little baby wings on its rounded back.  It curves around into a ball to wrap around the bracelet, and has interest on all sides.  The Dragon Egg is perhaps my favorite part of the new series – and given how good the other designs are, that is significant.  The egg is a larger bead, and

IMG_8826feels very satisfyingly heavy and smooth.  It is wittily conceived and designed, with a dragon scaled egg that looks innocuous at first glance.  A closer, second look reveals the little gap in the egg shell on one side, and the clawed dragon foot beginning to scrabble out.  Clearly, this is one egg that will not be hatching a fluffy chick.

Clockwise from clasp:  “Dragon Lock”, “Pink Conch”, “Easter Dragon”, “Pink Gold”, “Golden Quartz”, “Pink Desert”, “Dragon Egg”, “Rose Quartz”, “Unique Amber”, “Pink Petals”, “Lucky Dragon”, “Pink Petals”, “Unique Amber”, “Rose Quartz”, “Dragon Egg”, “Desert Rose”, “Unique”, “Engraved Romance”, Easter Dragon”, “Pink Conch”.

The sense of humour that is evident in many of Trollbeads design projects continues to delight me… who wouldn’t love a bead that brings a smile to one’s face every time it catches the eye?  These dragons simply make me smile…

Trollbeads Inspiration: Bracelet Envy

IMG_8553It’s happened to all of us… there are so many beautiful bracelets out there, it’s inevitable that one see a bracelet that belongs to another Trollie, and and fall  head over heels in lust with it!  Online there is a feast of images available to view for design ideas, and the key is to run with the inspiration, and create something that is uniquely yours.

IMG_8581My Refreshed Purples

IMG_8554The topic arose this week as I decided to refresh my teal and purple bracelet for Spring, lightening and softening to a lilac and mossy aqua combination.  I had it with me at the gallery and more than a couple of our ladies lamented that they would love a bracelet like that – and what a shame that the beads were from my private reserve…

IMG_8559but the truth is, a similar combination can easily be created using an array of current production and unique pieces.  Most ladies have a number of beads already in their collections that they could use as the base of the composition, and would only have to tweak the design with a few new additions to create a very similar look!

IMG_8555To build a soft lilac and cool green bracelet for Spring I reached for a nice soft Labradorite and a starting point.  Like eveyone, I do love the Labs that show a big diva flash, but even understated ones are a gorgeous shade of greyed blue green that works into nearly everything that I design.  Two labs firmly set this design’s mood.

IMG_8560I placed one of the newest designs in the collection right in the middle of this bracelet… I love the new Mother’s Garden pendant, and think it’s fabulous either on a necklace or on a bracelet such as this one!  With a soft oval shape and an appealing vine pattern, it’s a beautiful centerpiece for this design.  I cradled a “White Petals” (Which isn’t white at all, but a misty lilac…) in the new pendant, and I do like the effect the petal shapes give, allowing lots of light to come through and show off the silverwork.  Working my way out from that beginning, I blended and handful of soft lilac uniques with beloved production beads such as “Purple Flower Mosiac”, “Purple Prism”, “Grey Prism” and “Magical Lamp”.  It took no time at all to build a doppelganger for my own bracelet that has its own distinct personality.

Clockwise from Clasp:  “Large Flower Clasp”, “Purple Prism”, (such a pale, water colour version – isn’t it pretty?) “Unique”, “Hearts Galore”, Unique”, “Limited Edition Kimono”, “Purple Flower Mosaic”, “Dandelions”, “Labradorite”, “Limited Edition”, “Mothers Garden + White Petals”, “Unique”, (LOVE this one…) “Labradorite”, “Mothers Bouquet”, “Purple Flower Mosaic”, “Magical Lamp”, “Unique”, “First Signs”, “Unique”, “Grey Prism”.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Liquid Blues

This bracelet was inspired by both the new blues of Spring 2015’s Trollbeads Collection… and also by the arrival of a pair of extraordinary uniques.

IMG_8080When designing a new bracelet, I love to blend two or three colours together to form a palette that delights the eye.  there is no better way to “gel” the entire feel of a composition than to find a few beads that include all the colours of the design.  Often, I find a gorgeous individual bead, and let the entire bracelet follow it’s lead!

IMG_8081In this case I was delighted by the two uniques that frame the “Jewel of the Sea” fish at the heart of the bracelet.  Their rich palette, crisp detailing and complementary patterns just begged to be showcased together on a bracelet.  I think these two little beads have huge potential for a collector who likes to play… they could find all sorts of

IMG_8078different applications, over all seasons.  Imagine them paired with cobalt blue and gold over the holidays, royal blue, green and white for summer, or even with some of the softer blues, such as glittering “Beach”, “Seabed” and “Fountain of Life”.  The possibilities are endless….  However, with an entire new collection to play with, and so many gorgeous new

IMG_8085ocean themed blues therein, I decided to play together a cerulean blue and aqua blend.  The luscious new blue glass, “Silver Trace, Turquoise” (shown above) is so luscious – doesn’t it seem such a natural addition to the collection that it already feels as though it must have been there all along?!

IMG_8082“Seabed” is a welcome addition as well, for those ladies who love golden murano sparkle, and long for those slightly softer tones…. “Gentle Wave” is a silver in the classic Trollbeads approach.  It feels satisfyingly heavy, and is a lovely oval shape that will balance well with “Zanzibar” or the “Cherry Blossom Bead”.

IMG_8084In the end this bracelet was very easy to play together, and I felt spoiled by the abundance of beautiful blues and soft greens I had from which to choose…

Clockwise from clasp:  “Water Lock”, “Unique Glass”, “Unique Glass”, “Neverending, Sterling”, “Sea Glow”, “Heart Conch”, “Spring Wave”, “Silver Trace, Turquoise”, “Guardian of Treasures”, “Unique Glass”, “Jewel of Sea – part A”, “Amazonite”, “Jewel of Sea – Part B”, “Unique Glass”, “Mermaid Companion”, “Silver Trace, Turquoise”, “Seabed”, “Gentle Wave”, “Seabed Stripe”, “New Horizons”, “Unique Glass”, “Unique Glass”.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Spring 2015 Collection – Glowing Pinks

IMG_8098Spring officially sprang today at Tartooful!   (Never mind the stubborn rain clouds, they’ll come around…)  The gorgeous new collection by Trollbeads for Spring of 2015 feels like a ray of warm sunshine, and has us dreaming of cloudless skies, flowers and beaches.

IMG_8093With soft pinks, handy neutrals, juicy aquas, a handful of sparkle, and lots of super detailed silvers, this collection has a beautiful little something for everyone.  Today I was able to make up a half a dozen bracelets, each one with a radically different feel, and each one mostly composed of new designs.  The first one I’d like to share is inspired by one of the showstopping beads of the new series, the “Pink Conch”.  This pink and warm grey, striped bead is sprinkled with gold sparkle… (see center, above.)

IMG_8092This pink, grey and gold bracelet was so simple to create, it practically built itself!  It was such fun to see how this bead integrates with some of our favorites from the existing collection… “Honey Dawn, “Silver Trace, Gold”, “Pink Gold” and “Desert Rose” are all natural companions for the peachy new “Pink Petals” and “Pink Conch”.

Pink and gold has long been one of our favorite palettes at Tartooful, but the addition of a hint of grey gives it a whole new, fully grownup appeal.  These warm grey designs will be so useful blended with everything  – teal, emerald green, turquoise, hot pink, red, sapphire blue…

A few observations on various of these new designs:  “Seven Chakras” is satisfyingly heavy and symmetrical, despite its’ smaller size.  I think that its abstract, compact shape will make it a favorite for me to divide groupings of glass towards the end of bracelets, close to the clasp.  The new Cherry Blossom Lock is really beautiful.  It’s a little trickier to open the small end, so I recommend it for bracelets that aren’t redesigned every single day – but sooo worth the tiny bit of extra care, as it is stunning. Finally, I wasn’t certain about “Guardian of Nature” from the stock images, but now that I have seen it in person I very much like it… it’s nicely rounded and weighted, and I love the quizzical little faces that peek out between the foliage.  Classic Troll!

Clockwise from clasp:  “Cherry Blossom Clasp”, “Unique”, “Seven Chakras”, “Unique Amber”, “Engraved Romance”, “The Positive No”, “Pink Gold”, “Tropical Conch”, “Desert Rose”, “Compass”, “Honey Dawn”, “Rose Quartz”, “Silver Trace, Gold”, “Wild Cherry”, “Pink Petals”, “Neptune’s Promise”, “Desert Rose”, “Guardian of Nature”, “Pink Conch”, “Unique Amber”, “Seven Chakras”, “Unique”.

Welcome, Spring!
