It’s that epic season once again… when we all scramble to put ticks on shopping lists, fill stockings, and just generally make wishes come true. In the midst of what becomes a dizzyingly busy time, Tartooful is a calm little eye of the hurricane, where we still enjoy pampering each and every customer… so it makes us particularly happy when Black Friday comes and we can offer a wonderful treat, at a sweet little price!
This year we’re delighted to present the latest “Black Friday” creation from Trollbeads, the “Shimmer Royal”. For those of you who don’t recall, past years have also featured faceted glass, in shades of black and grey with rich goldstone accents. This bead is destined to become their companion on many of our ladies most glittering bracelets. It’s absolutely stunning, in a deep, indigo shade of blue that is inky and sparkling… it’s a perfect match to the retired “Blue Goldstone”, so if you have one of those it’s time to dust it off and get ready to play together a brand new design with it at its heart. Of course, it’s perfectly suited to the many space themed bracelets that are currently on so many play trays!
This bead is priced at CAD$74, the same price level as most other faceted glass beads… and ladies… It. Is. Worth. It. However, there are lots of other sweet treats to be had this Black Friday Weekend:
Phew! It’s a lot to take in, I know. All this, and wait – there’s more. These items may be ordered between now and Monday noon… and if these aren’t the items on your personal lust list – we’d be happy to craft your own personal “Black Friday” grouping of buy three, get the fourth free , and buy a decorative lock, get a bracelet chain or leather free. With tiered gifts, huge selection in store – including Christmas glitter uniques – and not to forget that stunning “Shimmer Royal”… you’ll find everything on your wish list this Black Friday Weekend.
How to purchase? Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, phone us at 604-924-0122 or message us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter… (we’re *everywhere*!). Ombre beadplay is always a fun little design project…
Casting an eye over our selection of uniques today I noticed that we have an absolutely marvelous collection of raspberry pinks in stock at the moment. I decided to have a bit of a play with them, but thought I’d give the design a little twist and try my hand at a crimson-to-pale pink ombre composition….
This collection of beads are wonderful, rich shades of soft blush pink through raspberry and down into a deep, satisfying crimson. Add an absolutely dazzling array of pattern and texture, and no matter how this composition came
together it was bound to be a fantastic bracelet. I really think that with these beads it would be impossible to make the bracelet look anything but gorgeous.
The most essential tool when designing this sort of bracelet is definitely a play tray… I string the beads onto the rod to find just the right placement for each bead. Often I’ll think I know just where a bead “belongs” in the ombre gradation – and then when I slot it in, it becomes apparent that it really looks better a little to the right or left.
At the two extreme ends of this bracelet design you’ll find some of the opaque unique beads that are such a delight to true collectors. The rich red and glittery one shown above has actually been tempting me for my own collection! So luxe and utterly delicious. At the other end of the bracelet be sure to note the beads that have elegantly formed flowers traced on milk glass backgrounds. These have been such a lovely fresh addition to the design oeuvre of glass Trollbeads uniques. I’d love to see an entire bracelet made up of these delicate beauties.
I knew that I wouldn’t allow many silvers to find their way onto this bracelet design…. partly because the fun of an ombre is to see how the colours relate to each other, gently transitioning from one shade to the next. It was also in large part because there were simply too many gorgeous beads that I wished to include in the composition! However, the overall effect is much more effective with a little silver to break up the colour blocks and allow the eye a spot to pause and rest. In the end I selected a few highly ornate silvers that were up to the task of matching the drama of their glass companions.
Both the silver and the glass elements in this composition are like a confection for the eye…
Clockwise from clasp: “Lace Lock”, All Glass beads uniques. Silvers: “Spiritual Ornament”, “Elderflowers”, “Spiritual Adornment”, “Wine Harvest”.
Don’t forget to drop by tonight and give a warm Edgemont Village welcome to the uber talented Alexis Dodd of Steelwood Design! She’ll be at the gallery from 5pm to 8pm tonight, to lift a glass with Tartoofulers and share her most recent designs. Drop by and enjoy all her gorgeous work, ask about custom designs, and get to know this fabulous local artist.
Today it’s all about “Aurora”. There are a handful of regular collection and limited edition beads that are unmistakably “Aurora”, and until fairly recently I thought we had to be content with this narrow selection of designs. However, lately I have noticed quite a few unique designs which feature that distinctive, hazy shimmer.
For the most part, these beads display a more subtle version of the Aurora effect, which has opened up new design options for me. I find now I can combine my softer Azure Bubbles with paler traditional Aurora designs and the new subtle uniques for a fresh look. Add a hint of dichroic glass and a couple of luminous stones and it’s a complete design.
The pair of stones that I have employed in this design are the smooth, retired form of “Chalcedony” and a treasured, very translucent “Dendritic Agate”. I’ve had the Chalcedony for many years, but the Dendritic Agate is a very recent addition. I came across it just before the Challenge began, so it managed to slip into the collection just in time. Dendritic Agate is a variety of Chalcedony Quartz, and is often found with deposits of other types of Chalcedony. This relationship is easy to see in a translucent example such as this, where the two stones are nearly identical, save for a few traces of Dendritic Agate’s distinctive fern textural markings. Imagine how difficult it must be for stone cutters to predict how to cut and facet these stones to best display their hidden branchlike patterns… years of experience and well honed instincts must be required!
These Azure bubbles play nicely with others…
As most of you know, we are currently showing Fake Plastic Trees, a photography and mixed media exhibit that is a part of the Capture Photography Festival… and last night we celebrated the artist and her work with an opening party.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support the artist… together you made an irresistible chemistry in the room, and the mood was fabulous. Laughing people, sparkling conversation, good friends – what else could one ask for on a warm Friday night?
How about a little live music? A very special thank you to Michale Rene Ertzinger who graciously played jazz trumpet for us to wind down the evening. If you missed his performance, or would like to hear more of his work, please visit his website and enjoy.
Finally, by popular demand here is the recipe we concocted for our signature cocktail for the evening… the “Saskatoon Sling”:
1 part freshly squeezed lime juice
2 parts cherry liqueur
4 parts gin
8 parts pineapple juice
2 parts Concentrated and cooled Saskatoon berry tea
Cocktail Umbrella, Swizzle Straw and fruit to garnish
To serve: Mix lime juice, cherry liqueur, gin and pineapple juice in a pitcher. Chill. Pour 1 oz Saskatoon berry tea into bottom of glass. Add cubed ice. Pour mixture from pitcher carefully into glass to layer over tea. Add splash of soda and garnish to taste with fruit.
Where to find Saskatoon Berry Tea in British Columbia? We found our delicious blend at South Island Saskatoons, in Cobble Hill on Vancouver Island. They were even kind enough to ship to us!
Thank you again to everyone who came out to help us celebrate this beautiful series and the lovely artist who created it!
Tartooful is honoured to once again host acclaimed local artist Biliana Velkova and her most recent series as a part of the 2016 Capture Photography Festival.
Fake Plastic Trees presents Velkova’s wry observations on the branding and commodification of nature. She romanticizes, exaggerates, and complicates the exploitation of nature, referencing tourist tropes found throughout the Saskatchewan prairies and Alberta’s Rocky Mountains.
Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Velkova lived under the Communist regime until immigrating to Canada in 1991 at the age of fifteen. Her memories of communism have deeply impacted the way in which she perceives the “West”, leading her to explore issues of capitalism, appropriation, and Western femininity. Although her interdisciplinary practice focuses on social and political issues from a devastatingly accurate, critical perspective, her delivery is optimistic, witty and affectionate.
From iconic, fake palm trees found throughout Saskatoon to the majestic views of Lake Louise, Velkova’s cinematic photographs celebrate opulence and kitsch. The glossy images of fake plastic trees create a spectacle from everyday encounters. Through her Bulgarian lens, Velkova offers a fresh and alternative way of viewing and interpreting the Canadian landscape we thought we knew.
“When an outsider comes to a new place, he sees the picturesque and the freakish, whereas the local sees through layers of emotion and memory” – Walter Benjamin.
Fake Plastic Trees by Biliana Velkova is now showing at Tartooful until April 28, 2016. Please join us at the gallery for the Opening Celebration, 8th April, 2016 from 7pm.
