Change is Hard.

IMG_4593What a ride we have been on the last few years.  Together Cristi and I have had many adventures, and we’ve experienced huge changes in both of our lives.  So much learned, so much achieved.   After today, Cristi is going to be heading off for a new adventure with her quirky, underbitten hound Remi in tow… at least for now.

IMG_4589Cristi, thank you for all the friendship, hard work, inspiration, encouragement and laughter.  I’ve been honoured to become a part of your life… and look forward to seeing where you go, and what you do next.  You are beautiful, smart, and so caring.  I love you dearly, and already I can’t wait for our next project as a team together.  xo C.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Cristi’s Hellebore Bracelet

photo 1photos:  Margaret Church

IMG_4547Today I feature a bracelet that came out of Cristi’s and my Bead playdate last week… This bracelet is composed wholly of beads from her personal collection, but it’s an original combination that I have never seen her wear before.

IMG_4548

IMG_4546Ordinarily I’m more attracted to the warm side of pinks… those pinks that lean towards the yellow side of the colour wheel, that hint at apricot and peach.  However, this bracelet schools me in the allure of cool pinks with a hint of blue, that whisper lilac.  Maybe it’s the contrasting warmth of the ivory that keeps it from being cold…

IMG_4544… But I think it may be that it reminds me of an old fashioned flower, the Helleborus Orientalis, or lenten rose.  I grew up in a garden that had a huge bed full of them.  My garden obsessed Mother planted them en masse over the course of many years, until they began to cross pollinate, creating countless new colours and forms.  Each Spring it was completely out of control gorgeous.  Cristi has recently fallen in love with these subtle beauties, and has started her own collection in her garden.  Perhaps it’s their plum pink, creamy bone and barely green palette that inspired her in this composition.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Cristi’s Tropical Holiday Bracelet

IMG_4575

IMG_4567This bracelet design by Cristi came together in a flash… she was playing together some new bracelet ideas with her collection, and this palette almost built itself, jumping onto the playtray rod in only a minute or two.  It’s not that it’s so familiar to her – I can’t recall her ever having worn this palette before.  However,  this grouping of

IMG_4569colour drenched beads is so powerful and rich that by following their lead Cristi was able to rapidly create this gorgeous composition.  She scattered the unifying teal and turquoise beads evenly across the bracelet… made sure that the two flame coloured beads were well spaced and balanced on either side of the design… and then filled in the rest

IMG_4568of the bracelet with warm golden glass elements.  Lots of silver allows the eye a chance to pause as it takes in the saturated colour.  Too many glass in a row makes it harder to really “see” each bead as an individual design.  Golden toned beads used here include a lovely unique, Lime Prism, Honey Dawn and the hard-to-place “Power Chakra”

IMG_4573

IMG_4570You’ll note that Cristi has placed complementary tones together in each micro composition of glass elements – creating greater colour contrast and a high energy feel to the overall bracelet design.  She centered the Lime Prism, as it is a little different in shape and tone than any of its companions on this bracelet.  This is usually the simplest way to utilize a bead that otherwise might throw off the balance of a design.

As soon as Cristi had teased this joyful design together she declared that it felt like a Tropical getaway… I’d have to agree!

Happy Birthday Cristi…

I feel very fortunate to have Cristi in my life.  I count her as more than just a friend and colleague, she’s family.  She brings her positive, creative, intteligent and happy energy to every room she enters… and Tartooful just wouldn’t be Tartooful without her.

Today is Cristi’s birthday… so if you happen to be in the Village be sure to give her some love on her special day!

Love you tons, Cristi… Happy Birthday!

Trollbeads Inspiration: Cristi’s collection Re-Imagined

Autumn Inspiration has officially struck Tartooful, and even Cristi has succumbed.  Cristi has stoically kept the same arrangements on her bracelets for years… but the acquisition last Christmas of a Fantasy necklace was the first strike towards change, after which more than a few new beads were added to the collection, and now that the new Autumn 2012 Series has arrived, her old designs have finally been swept away by completely fresh arrangements.  So grab a coffee, pull up a chair… Are you ready?  This is going to take a little while!

Her necklace is magnificent… super long and so rich with a tapestry of colours and textures.  It displays an enviable collection of uniques, retireds, and lots of unusual expressions of old favorites.

The golden tones of her old purple and gold composition help to bring rhythm and cohesion to the new design.  In addition, the abundance of translucent bead designs give a brilliant, jewel box feel to the necklace.

Cristi’s pale blues have been reincarnated as a much more subtle and moody composition with the addition of earthy notes such as “Labradorite”, “Milan” and “Organic Bubble”.  “Midnight Flowers” and an Artisan Bead introduce deep indigo.

It’s really the “Milan” in this design that brings it all together… at first glance this bead appears to be simply black and sand in colour, but close inspection reveals grey, vanilla, rust and a remarkable, brilliant blue.  When placed in a composition near to blue, this bead shows off it’s colours in a most surprising and delightful way.

Clockwise from clasp:  “Basic Double Lobster Clasp” (retired), “Artisan Bead”, “Hydrangea”, “Turquoise Ribbon”, “Neither Fish Nor Bird” (retired), “Labradorite”, “Mermaid”, “Light Blue Gold”, “Summer Jewel, Small”, “Midnight Flowers”, “Art Deco”, “Milan”, “Mocha”, “Light Blue Stripe”, “The Kiss”, “Organic Stripe”.

One of our favorite design themes is a blend of warm and cool whites, and Cristi’s collection contains some fascinating neutral toned examples that are anything but bland.

She has combined coveted retireds such as “Chai Bud”, “Grey Armadillo” and “Turquoise Dot” with current collection stars such as “Conch” and Switzerland’s World Tour entry, “Mountain Crystal”.  A very unusual, grey “Blue Desert” plays as a neutral, and a retired “King and Queen” beautifully echoes the blue dots of the “Turquoise Dot”.  The retired “Sparrow” is a sweet touch…

Clockwise from clasp:  “Basic Double Lobster Clasp” (retired), “Grey Armadillo”(retired), “Deck of Cards”, “Turquoise Dot”(retired), “Happy Fish”, “Conch”, “King and Queen”(retired), “Blue Desert”, “Sparrow”(retired), “Chai Bud” (retired), “Royal”, “Mountain Crystal” (Switzerland World Tour), “Heart”, “Beige Blue Dot”.

… What could you do with your beads if you re imagined them?
