Now Showing: Andrew McTaggart & Sara Morison

“Beaver on the slide”, original art by Andrew McTaggart.  Mixed media.  40″x60″ 2016.

img_4991North Vancouver is a dynamic place, perched between our working waterfront and the coastal mountains… and our incredibly rich artistic community finds inspiration in our dramatic environment.  That beginning point, however, in the hands of two different artists, can create very diverse expressions.

This week we are delighted to unveil a fresh installation, exploring North Vancouver’s artistic diversity at Blueshore Financial’s “Arts on View” gallery space at 12th & Lonsdale, North Vancouver.

“Beaver on the slide” is an arresting piece that demands you stop and look closely.  It depicts the workhorse aircraft of our coastal harbours, the beloved and iconic Beaver.  upon closer examination you’ll find weathered rivets, inner workings of the engine and even painstakingly detailed decals.  The care that went into the detailed depiction shows the affection that the artist feels for his subject.  Perhaps that’s natural, as when not at his easel, Mctaggart spends his time piloting commercial aircraft.  Although Mctaggart has been an artist for many years, this marks his exhibition debut in North Vancouver, and we delighted to have been a part of that.

img_4987 “And the Sea Remembers” original art by Sara Morison.  30″x40″ acrylic on canvas.

img_4986In contrast, you’ll find various works by acclaimed local artist, Sara Morison.  These pieces have also been inspired by her experience of the ocean… but Morison’s abstract, joyful and brilliantly coloured artworks come from a different perspective, and thus express a completely different aspect of our Maritime environment.  Sara is a full time artist, who publishes, teaches and paints regularly.  She last exhibited at Tartooful in 2013, and we are so pleased to be able to once again show her beautiful work.

Thank you to BlueShore Financial for hosting this exhibit, and supporting our community of North Vancouver artists.

Arts on View on Lonsdale – a Blueshore Financial Community Program, curated by Tartooful.  1250 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Simplicity

3

Today at the gallery we are playing with a simple design of pure, Trollbeads silver…

5

I decided today to create a leather necklace that felt sleek, sophisticated and modern.  I carefully combed through the Trollbeads silvers, finding and selecting  all the boldest, simplest, heaviest designs.  These are geometric forms that give me such joy.  Their naturally balanced symmetrical forms are satisfying to work with, as they easily stand alone, or combine nearly effortlessly with similar companions.  Each one feels like a tiny, modern art sculpture – can’t you imagine them placed on nicely lit, miniature plinths in an art gallery for mice?

1 (1)

6I began by placing “Victory” in the center of the necklace composition.  This marvelously large and dramatic piece melds organic, round forms with angular, chevron forms.  This was a fit choice, as it happily accommodates both rounded designs such as “Three siblings”, “Transformation” and “Trefoil Knot”, as well as more angular items such as “Smiling Cylinder” and “Two Sides to Everything”.  As I built outwards in the composition I occasionally added a matched pair of beads.  This gives a sense of balance and rhythm to the design, without the rigidity – not to mention predictability – of a perfectly matched set of paired beads.

From left to right:  “Water”,   “Neverending”, “Two Sides to Everything”, “Three Siblings”, “Transformation”, “Endless”, “Soft Heart”, “Victory”, “Frames”, “Endless”, “Smiling Cylinder”, “Trefoil Knot”, “Love Within”, “Water”.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Honey Bees

IMG_1972

IMG_1967Honeybees!

Don’t you adore the new Trollbeads Honey Bee Spacers?!  I am so enjoying them, and am using them on everything from Fantasy Necklaces and bangles to chain bracelets and even the new Ring of Change.  Just one Bee at the bottom of a fantasy necklace beautifully balances a bead on its wings, for a complete design in a snap.  A pair of bees frame a bead for a simple but dramatic bangle.  It’s an instant design maker with fabulous flair.

IMG_1970Full disclosure demands that I admit that I’ve always had a soft spot for Bees.  I’ve always identified them as being a special totem animal to me… Industrious, useful, working for the good of their family and community, and in harmony with nature… these are creatures that are inspiring and well worth emulating.  Historically virtually every culture has revered bees as being a very magical and special part of nature.  The Kalahari believed that the bee played a key role in the creation of the first human.  The bowstring of the Hindu god Kamadeva is said to be made of bees.

IMG_1969Bees figured prominently in the myths of the ancient Greeks, with several gods being affiliated with the tiny creatures.  Apollo, the sun god, is said to have acquired his powers from the Thriae, a trinity of bee goddesses that were far more ancient than the familiar pantheon of Greek gods. Among the later, classical Greek gods Aristaeus was the god of beekeepers.  In ancient Egyptian mythology the tears of the god Ra are said to have become bees.  These are only a few examples of the importance of bees in ancient and indigenous cultures… they have been revered from the beginning of humanity.

IMG_1971

IMG_1968Today we read almost daily of the plight of the bee.  With our increasingly industrialized farming techniques, bees have become a commodity and a cog in the farming machine.  Their hives are transported from one side of the continent to the other, rushed from one crop pollination to another.  The plants they hover over are sprayed with complex fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, that impact not only on their immediate health, but modify their DNA to change the way generations of future bees function.  Bees are under physical and biological stresses that we are just beginning to understand – and they need our support in order to survive.  Imagine our world without bees… Consider the profound impact on our farms, our gardens, our wild places.

IMG_1966

These remarkable little creatures have been quietly working in the background for millennia, making our world a better place.  Perhaps it is time that we saw them with some of the reverence that was paid to them by ancient peoples.

Trollbeads Inspiration:Lemon Tart & Earl Grey Tea

IMG_1952

IMG_1961This afternoon I’m sitting in a ray of sunshine at my desk at Tartooful… and I am craving a cup of classic Earl Grey Tea and a traditional lemon tart…. Do you know the kind I mean?  It would have a home made butter crust, with little fork marks around the slightly imperfect edge.  It would be made with free range, happy-chicken eggs with deep, rich eggs yolks… and the lemon curd would be that same, ridiculously beautiful shade of yellow.

IMG_1956

IMG_1953…Not too much sugar, but just enough to take the edge off the tart, citrus flavour of the fruit.  That kind of lemon tart is so satisfying.  It scratches every sort of snacking itch… buttery, flaked, baked, sweet and sour pure afternoon sugar fix.  No matter how delicious, I could only ever eat one of these decadent treasures.

The Earl Grey tea, with its subtle hint of Bergamot, is an essential element, necessary to bring a little balance to the afternoon treat.  The tea cuts the tart, firmly forbidding it from becoming cloying.  Sipping from the hot cup demands that one slowly savour the whole experience.

Sigh…. are you there with me?  It’s time for afternoon tea.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Hidden Garden Bracelet

IMG_1947

The arrival of this stunning “Glass Trolls” made me want to create a bracelet matched its dewy and light as air mood.

With delicious shades of apple green, to golden honey, to aqua and forget-me-not blue, the dichroic glass acts as an inspiration and focal point for the whole bracelet.

IMG_1941

This allows me to pull together a diverse set of blues and greens that include turquoise, teal, sage, birds egg blue and even this gorgeous Emerald that takes the center position in the composition.

A pair of newer design uniques come in handy for knitting together the palette as well… these swirled glass patterns hide every shade in the bracelet, with periwinkle to teal and all shades of blue between.  I love the dimension of pattern in these glass; they invite the eye to dive right into their cerulean depths.

I find that “Tropical Travels” is a good match for the size and lush mood of this “Glass Trolls”, and I’ve added a slightly smaller “Royal” and “Ornamental Flower” to complete the set of silvers.  To me, the overall mood of this bracelet is a Summers afternoon in a rich garden.  Perhaps this verdant place is in an exotic locale, like a Florentine Palazzo’s courtyard, adorned with vines and fountains….
