Trollbeads Inspiration: A walk in the Forest

IMG_0950

IMG_0945Today I enjoyed a day of mid winter brilliant sunshine here at Tartooful… We went for our morning trail walk along the creek close to our home, and the combination of pure blue sky and rich green forest was absolutely magical!  It’s been a wonderful experience to get to know the forest in an intimate way over the past six months, as we have walked the same trail over and over through the changing of the seasons.  When we started our daily trail walks it was the height of Summer, with warm, dawns that broke at five in the morning.

IMG_0947The midsummer forest was lush and brilliant emerald green, with soft leaves filling the branches of the birch that line the creek.  The trail was dusty and stayed on my skin and in my nostrils long after we had gone on with the rest of our day.  Over the weeks my feet came to know every rock, and every turn of the trail.  Just when I thought I had it’s path fully memorized the season began to turn to Autumn and it became a completely different place again.  With the arrival of the rains the paths first became hard and wet… then became sodden in low places and occasionally even became little creeks!

IMG_0949

IMG_0946When the leaves first started to fall it felt strange, how messy, and brown our little stretch of forest was becoming… but then the light began to change and the beauty of the Autumnal forest became more clear.  With every leaf that dropped, the floor of the forest became a little more brightly illuminated, and little treasures became visible in every nook and cranny.  Fall blooming crocus peeked through here, a patch of brilliant yellow mushrooms there… even the slugs seemed taken aback by the sudden bright light!

IMG_0944

Now we’re in the depths of Winter, and we’ve seen frosty mornings, where icicles decorate the edges of the branches that dip into the creek, and the steps of the path glitter in the sun like diamonds.  This morning the sun came through the bare branches of the birch in beautiful white shafts, playing fascinating shadows on the graveled path.  I can’t wait to see the next six months as all the plants begin to wake up and unfurl their foliage once again.  It’s hard to believe that in only a few short weeks we’ll once again be in the green light of the canopy of leaves!

Trollbeads Inspiration: The Calm Between Storms…

IMG_0853

IMG_0855Well, here we are in the very busiest time of year… the gallery is hopping with holiday shoppers, the streets are bustling, and the sound of live music can be heard drifting through the Village.  Most of us are dashing from one errand to another, busily preparing our homes for the upcoming gatherings, and attending various holiday celebrations that are already underway.  It can all be a little overwhelming… but it’s part of the rhythm of the seasons and what fun to have a such a joyful time as this in the very darkest time of year.

IMG_0854

The key to maintaining sanity seems to be to take little breaks, and enjoy those moments of calm between the storms…

IMG_0858

…So enjoy dressing up, designing and wearing your most extravagant bracelets ever – but today, on this quiet Sunday before Christmas, take a moment with a cup of tea and savour this calming bracelet…How fitting that it features a number of beads from the “Balance of Nature” kit.

IMG_0856This Autumn 2015 series has intrigued, delighted and, at times baffled us at Tartooful.  On the one hand the designs are absolutely gorgeous – exactly the sort of subtle, natural tones with which we love to play.  On the other hand, we are, at times, hard pressed to determine which bead is which – many of the designs can mimic each other in their extreme forms!  Rainbow of luck, Power of Hope and Shades of peace are close relations.  No matter – we love them, whatever their names are…. (“A bead by any other name would look as sweet…”)

IMG_0860 (1)Today I teased together a soft and pretty plum, grey and celadon composition that is designed to be that moment of calm… While it could be seen as hinting at the Spring to come, the subtly earthy tone of the plum, makes me think that this could be an all season bracelet.  I’ve included “Pink Conch” in the crew, as it is surely a cousin to the “Balance” family.  Recently the “Pink Conch” examples that we have been receiving have a lovely olive tone to the stripes that open up new possibilities for that already lovely design.

IMG_0861

IMG_0857I’ve included generous helpings of sparkle in this bracelet – nearly half of the beads in the design are ones that dance with gold.  For me, a large part of the appeal of this bracelet is the way these subtle colours play with each other.  On the other hand, I think that without the contrast of the deeply patterned silvers, the distinctive texture of the natural stones, and the brilliant light of the “Dichroic Ice”… it might be too homogenous and fall a little flat.  I’ve found that before when trying to design with all deserts or all azures – they are lovely but they benefit from the addition of contrast.

IMG_0851 (1)

Clockwise from clasp:  “Lace Lock”, “Purple Prism”, “Dichroic Ice”, “Mothers Bouquet”, “Shades of Peace”, “Unique Glass”, “Pink Conch”, “Spiritual Adornment”, “Power of Hope”, “Dendritic Agate”, “Rainbow of Luck”, “Tropical Travels”, “Purple Flower Mosaic”, “Ruby Rock”, “Purity”, “Eidelweiss (Switzerland World Tour)”, “White Petals”, “Grey Prism”.

Savour the calm – and then dive into the glorious chaos!

Trollbeads Inspiration: Dreamy

IMG_0695

IMG_0700Today I once again went searching for a little colour inspiration in the beutifully illustrated pages of the Trollbeads book “Trollbeads: An Icon in Jewellery Design”.  Of course I found a great many images with wonderful palettes to consider, but in the meditative mood of the quiet gallery today I was attracted to one that

IMG_0704featured a patch of Black Mondo Grass.  The light surrounding the inky grasses is misty and blue in hue, a delicate palette into which I couldn’t wait to dive.

I started with a stunning “Blue Desert” that is a dark slate blue, with an area on one side that lightens to a subtly transparent claret.  The generous dose of glitter in this bead helps to further warm the overall look.

IMG_0694

IMG_0705This is currently a tricky bead to partner, (although when the Autumn Collection launches it will find lots of beautiful companions), but I placed it opposite the “Flowers on Indigo” as it also has that delicious combination of deep sapphire and claret.

IMG_0698To ensure that the mood of the bracelet stayed light and airy I added multiple dots of white:  a “Denritic Agate” that is nearly pure white, one of the Summer Stones “Howlite”s, a couple of wonderfully shimmering “Dichroic Ice”, and of course a “Diamond Bead, White”.  The Two faceted “Chalcedony” further add to the light, glowing look of the design.

IMG_0696

IMG_0703I love the way the light plays in this particular Azure Bubbles – it has taken me great restraint not to add it to my own personal collection!  I find it fascinating that in some lights I can see a clear layer of amber glass, yet when I look directly at the surface of the bead, it’s not green at all.  It’s a wonderful example of why I always Look at a bead sideways, and into the light….

Trollbeads Inspiration: “The Gold of the Sea”

IMG_0669amber like honey…

IMG_0658Some spectacular Trollbeads amber uniques arrived at Tartooful this week, and I couldn’t wait to sit down and play together a delicious golden concoction purely of these beautiful beads.  With such a wide array of colours, sizes, shapes, textures and finishes, these beads offer a complete palette with which it is a pleasure to design.

IMG_0662background image courtesy of “An Icon in Jewellery Design:  Trollbeads”.

IMG_0659I recalled that there were some very inspiring images of amber beads in the coffee table book that Trollbeads published a few years ago… so I used it as a backdrop for today’s photo shoot.

As it says in the book: “The Trollbeads with amber, hardened tree resin, tell a fantastic story.  Between 30 and 50 million years ago,

IMG_0665resin flowed from prehistoric coniferous trees across an area ranging from the Ural mountains in the East to the massive Swedish forests in the West.  The resin dropped to the forest floor, where it lay for several millions of years, hardening to amber, often with an insect or a tiny plant fragment inside it.

IMG_0666Later, rivers and ice flows spread the amber far and wide. Today amber washes up on beaches all over the globe.  Thousands of pieces of amber jewellery have been found in Denmark’s heaths and moorlands.  Danish Iron Age tombs have revealed that beads of amber and glass were often combined to make elegant necklaces for prominent women of the period.”

IMG_0657

I can’t sign off without mentioning that these ambers *feel* fantastic to wear… they are so light and warm, even though they are generously sized.  They click together in a satisfying way, and shimmer and glitter in the sunshine!

Trollbeads Inspiration: Inky Azures

IMG_0615

IMG_0620A new wave of Azure Bubbles arrived recently at the gallery, and we fell in love with this changeable beauty of a bead all over again.  This grouping of glass are all deep, inky blues with a host of micro bubbles in each one.  The usual large bubbles are still there, but in the layer below that there is a subtle, milky way swath of the tiniest of bubbles.

IMG_0614

IMG_0618They look almost like the silver dots in group two glass “Milky Way” – but even smaller.  It’s fascinating stuff!  For those of us who have a mild obsession with this particular pattern of bead, it represents an entire new are of collecting to be done.  Some of them are almost chocolate in colour, with just a hint of blue that shows when the light reflects off the core.

IMG_0616

IMG_0617Others are a more slate blue, still others are a deep violet with subtle ribbons of indigo.  My favorites are those that have a hint of green in the blue, with lots of micro bubbles, and a flash of burgundy as the light hits them.  Gorgeous!

These new Azures are bang on for Autumn colour trends, and will be

IMG_0621phenomenal paired with rich clarets – think Rubies, cherry ambers or the upcoming Hessonite Garnet!  Today I’ve chosen a spectacular group of unique ambers that sparkle and glow in the sunlight.  They make a perfect foil for the deep navies of the Azures.

IMG_0612

This bracelet was a cinch to play together… the Azures and Ambers work together effortlessly and with the addition of a few bolder silvers and a handful of Scot Bouwens’ beautifully organic glass – voila!

IMG_0610

Clockwise from clasp:  “Freya Lock”, “Azure Bubble”, “Magical Lamp”, “Paradise Birds” (retired), “Azure Bubbles”, “Unique Amber”, “Stone Flower”, “Spiritual Adornment”, “Azure Bubbles”, “Unique Amber”, “Flowers on Indigo”, “Unique Amber”, “Azure Bubbles”, “Silver Ornament”, “Cliffs”, “Unique Amber”, “Azure Bubbles”, “Jugend”, “Magical Lamp”, “Azure Bubbles”.

Trollbeads Inspiration: Unapolagetically Pretty

IMG_0545

IMG_0542Today’s bracelet is a riot of colour… a pink and green confection that is blatantly and apologetically pretty.  It brings to mind big, blowsy roses, greenly fragrant pelargoniums and giant beach balls of pink hydrangea blossoms.  Why not enjoy a  late Summer splash of bright and happy colour while the sun is still bright and warm?!

IMG_0537

IMG_0540What better silver to anchor the center position of the design than a big, dramatic “Rose of June”.  It’s fabulous value in the collection at $59 – it feels like it should be at least a $75 bead, doesn’t it?  I love everything about it.  The slightly messy, very natural feeling petals, the finely detailed leaves on the verso, and of course the small, precious pearl that nestles among the foliage.

IMG_0545

IMG_0538Itty bitty silvers just wouldn’t feel right with this big bad girl of a bracelet, so I continued with only a few silvers, with each one of some substance.  “Spiritual Ornament” has good presence, with it’s larger dimensions, and detailed patterning.  “Paradise Birds” is satisfyingly heavy and feels wonderful in the hand.  As an aside – I notice

IMG_0539that Paradise Birds has been shuffled to the “retired” section in my ordering catalogue… without any fanfare it would appear that it has been retired.  If you haven’t already picked up this beautiful bead, I highly recommend it as a great addition to any collection.

For glass beads I simply reached for a juicy array of uniques in hard to find shades of raspberry and a sweet, clear green.  Delicious!

IMG_0543Juicy!
