Anyone who has walked past the shop at night has stopped to gaze at the new pieces by Steelwood Design, glowing in the window.  This local atelier creates beautiful, functional pieces created from recycled wood and metal sourced from the North Shore.  Their lamps, benches, tables, servingwares and so much more are inspired by the raw beauty of the West Coast, and are perfectly designed for the way we live here.

Girls Night In

Time to kick the January doldrums!

Capilano Elementary will be hosting a unique fundraiser this Thursday evening, starting at 7pm, for a tiny admission charge of $5, you’re invited to nosh complimentary appies and sip wine, while strolling through a selection of local vendors with tempting treats, picked out just for ladies… It’s the perfect “Girls Night IN”.  The best part is that it’s a completely guilt-free shopping spree, knowing that a big chunk of proceeds is going directly to the school and their information technology program.

Tartooful will be there to support this worthy cause, with all of our favorite pampering treats in tow as well as jewellery by Christy Feaver, Zula, Peony & Peridot, the Be Series and the legendary Trollbeads!

It’ll be a fun night, so bring your girlfriends out, relax and enjoy…

Smitten

Isn’t it funny how a bead can kind of creep up on you?

There have been so many times that I’ve seen a bead design and thought “ho-hum…on the right bracelet it’ll look great, but it’s not for me”… only to see it in a completely different light a few months later.  Perhaps it’s a matter of context:  the season, or the colour family that is speaking to me at the time… But for whatever reason, I’ve learned not to completely dismiss any of Troll’s designs.

A good example is the “Diamond Bead, Pink”… Last Christmas I welcomed it into the collection, with it’s gorgeous colour and huge drama – but I didn’t really see at as a bead that I would want for my own bracelet.  Then this example arrived at the shop and I was smitten!  It’s a softer shade of raspberry than usual, and simply lovely.

I’ve seen a few truly amazing raspberry bracelets this year, and lots of original colour combinations:  pink & silver grey, pink & white, pink, pink and more pink… but how about pink and gold?  Stunning.

Sigh.  This may mean I’ll have to start a new bracelet…

Roadtrip Kit…

With so many of you getting ready to travel this holiday season, we thought it was a good time to offer a few suggestions for a kit of functional luxuries to help you feel at home while on the road…

Start with a perfect shave kit:  these ones are made by Vancouver’s own RedFlag Design.  They are sewn from rugged recycled sailcloth that has been overdyed in a myriad of soft grey blues.  Each unique piece is beautifully finished with well made zippers, hand knotted pulls and functional leather tabs.  Best of all, this clever design louvers open with more contents, but folds neatly back on itself when emptied, to take up a minmum of precious suitcase space.

You’re particular about your bathroom luxuries at home, so why settle for nasty drugstore brands when you need a lift the most?  At Tartooful we have lots of beautiful treats for all your senses… Pretty new resin toothbrushes by Alan Stuart of New York, each one tucked in a reusable travel container… Gourmet Marvis toothpaste from Florence, and of course  lotions, soaps, travel candles and lip balms by Tokyo Milk.  (Airplanes are such dry places… keep your hand lotion and lip balm close…)

Now that your cosmetic kit is packed, you’ll want to think about your carry-on luggage.  Ideally it should be a bag that is flexible enough to be your “everything” bag once you reach your destination as well… I like to suggest Astrosatchel’s Medium Tote as a great travel bag.  It’s compact enough to be a handbag on your trip, is open plan to accommodate all sorts of unexpected finds, very secure and very comfortable, with it’s wide adjustable strap.  This bag is feather light – just the thing when every ounce counts!  I would also suggest that a wallet by Astrosatchel is ideal for travel: durable, secure, easily stores multiple currencies, coins, cards galore and even space for your passport.  Naturally, these designs are as beautiful as they are functional – very tartooful.

Now, all you need is a book to keep you company… Don’t settle for an overpriced bodice ripper at the airport – instead stop into our neighbours at 32 books and pick something simply wonderful.  You’ll be supporting a local independent bookseller and will find something so much better.

Bon Voyage…

New at Tartooful: Tokyo Milk

We are delighted to introduce to Tartooful the stunningly beautiful body care line, Tokyo Milk…

Created by Margot Elena, these little luxuries are treats for the senses, from the packaging, to the unusual and complex fragrances, to the extraordinary quality of each soap, lotion, or candle… Margot Elena is known in the industry not only as a talented “nose”, but also as an uncompromising designer…She recently said on her blog:

““Fight for good design.” Good design is often a struggle of pushing and pulling the tiniest of details; have patience, keep at it. The right design will emerge and tell you it’s there…when it feels harmonious. It will “feel right.” There’s always a tension that is unresolved–you have to be sensitive and have discipline to see design all the way through.

Her meticulous work and talent is our gift, as we can enjoy these beautiful everyday products, and share them with our friends… Our senses are tempted by fragrances such as “Honey and the Moon”, (subtly sweet: Honey, Sugared Violet, Jasmine & Sandalwood) or “Let them Eat Cake”, (A touch of decadence: Sugar Cane, Coconut Milk, Vanilla Orchid & White Musk).  Like all Tartooful products, every part of these treats is a delight to use – the apothecary style bottles and tubes are housed in beautifully designed and finished boxes bearing her signature graphic design.

Come experience the genius of Margot Elena at Tartooful…

9 days… ’til the Little Troll

This warm & lovely design group includes some of my favorites:  “Wildcat”, with its soft sand swirls with gorgeous blue undertone… “Chocolate Parrot” features a deep bubble with a hint of the same insane blue… and this particular “Brown Desert” boasts a tortoiseshell texture that is most unusual.

Remember Mom…

Trollbeads is always a tartooful choice

This weekend is Mother’s Day… We know how hard it can be to find something beautiful and meaningful for Mom, but at tartooful that’s our specialty.  Here’s a few of our favorite suggestions:

Lovefresh body goodies are pure luxury.  Made with organic ingredients and free of undesirables such as parabens, petroleum products and artitificial preservatives, these natural treats are as good for you as they feel.  Choose from lotions, wash or our personal favorite, sugar scrub, in scents such as Lemon Verbena, Pomegranate, Pear, Lavender and Pink Grapefruit…

The “Be” series of sterling  jewellery is striking a chord with tartooful customers… These simple necklaces, rings and bangles each bear a tiny word to remind the wearer of their core values… The perfect gift for a Mom who teaches and lives those values every day.

We’re delighted to have a huge selection of RedFlag design’s amazing bags in stock, just in time for Mom’s day!  These totes, duffels, wallets and handbags are as hardworking as they are beautiful.  RedFlag’s new collection features overdyed sailcloth in subtle grey tones, from a deep charcoal-raisin to the softest of greyed blues.  All the bags feature their trademark detailing, such as knotwork straps and industrial grommets.  These are the pieces that will be used every day this summer…

“Bird Stories Again” by Anne Griffiths 36″x36″

Original art is always a memorable and thoughtful gift… perhaps just the right thing to honour a Mother on a special occasion – the birth of a new baby, the graduation of the first child, or the year that the children leave the nest?  We are delighted to represent a number of talented, local artists and can help you to select the perfect peice.

Sometimes a tiny gesture can be just right:  Phoenix Botanicals creates organic herbal balms with botanicals they gather themselves.  Every detail is considered, from their subtle fragrances such “Little Wing”, (vanilla, vervain, magnolia & ylang ylang) to their highly functional and biodegradable tubes.  Very tartooful….

This just wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Trollbeads… This brilliant line of Danish jewellery is justifiably beloved by many tartoofulers, and a beautiful new bead is a perfectly thoughtful way to celebrate Mothers Day…

There are so many other brilliant ideas in the shop at the moment, I can’t possibly list them all here… please stop by for a personal visit this week and let us help you to find the perfect thing for the Mother in your life…

Avoca of Ireland Goodies now in stock

A boxful of gorgeous treats from Ireland just arrived at Tartooful!

We now have Avoca’s candles and old fashioned soaps, made with botanicals from Avoca’s own gardens which have been organic for more than 20 years… The candles nestle in glasses with their signature colours and patterns, while the soaps come wrapped in pretty papers, ready for gifting.

Of course, Avoca is known for their textiles, so we have soft, warm scarves and blankets for snuggling.  Their lightweight, “Bonheur” scarf is finely striped in greys, pinks or greens and perfect for year-round use in cool Vancouver.  The “Circus” throw is traditional Irish wool quality, but with an unexpected riot of brilliant, modern colour… It’s just the thing to warm and brighten our rooms on a dull and rainy west coast day.

The window is glowing with Avoca’s lovely wares, take a walk past and see…
